How to use Spyware Removal Software These directions are in no way complete and may contain errors or omissions. These instructions are to be used in conjunction with the built in help files offered by the programs themselves and the online support forums relating to each of the individual programs. Use at your own risk. Back up your important files before using! Spy ware removal software should be run at least once a week and after any internet session that may have taken you to a website against your will, or if you are receiving pop up ads. Ad-Aware Personal SE: If the program has been loaded on your system, follow the directions below starting at number 1. If it is not loaded on your system, scroll down to the end of this document and follow the directions at the bottom of this page for instruction on how to get and install the latest version of Ad-aware personal se on your computer. 1. The program can be started (launched) from either of two or more places depending on how the program was initially installed on your computer. The easiest method is to double click the Ad-aware Icon on the desktop. If you do not have a desktop icon you will have to use the “All Programs” list by clicking on the “Start” button in the lower left corner of the desktop screen and then clicking on “all programs” then click on “Lavasoft ad-aware se personal” then click on the “Ad-aware SE personal” icon. 2. When the program starts you will want to get the most current data signatures and program updates by clicking on the globe at the top right of the page. The “performing webupdate window will appear. 3. Click the “connect” button and you will get a message “no updated components abailable” or the update will be preformed and you will need to follow the on screen prompts or click the “finish” button. You will be left with the main program window. 4. Start the scan by pressing the “start” button. This will bring you to a new menu with choices of doing a “smart system scan”, “full system scan”, “custom scan” or “scan volume for ads”. Click on “perform full system scan”. 5. Click the “next” button and the scan begins. You can click the “cancel” button to stop the scan if needed. Some scans can take a very long time, check the number of scanned objects, it should increase during the scan. Don’t worry if it seems to stay on the same number for a long time, it may be deep scanning compressed files. 6. When the scan completes it will give you a summary of what was found, click the “next” button to see the list of what was found. If critical items in the list are not selected with a check mark in the box next to the item, you will have to select them manually. Do this by placing the cursor over one of the boxes and then click the right mouse button, this will bring up a menu list. Choose with the left mouse button “select all” from this list. This will place a check in all the boxes. Only the critical items or objects need to be removed, mru lists or other non-threatening items can be left. 7. Be sure to look through the list by scrolling down to the bottom of the list. This is to insure you are not removing an item you should keep. If you are not sure of what to keep, call an expert, ask a knowledgeable friend or search the Internet to see if the item is safe. 8. Click the next button. The items will be quarantined and deleted and you will be returned to the main page where you can re-run the scan or quit the program by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the program window. Spybot S&D: If the program has been loaded on your system, follow the directions below, if it is not loaded on your system, scroll down to the end of this document and follow the directions at the bottom of this page for instructiobvn on how to get and install the latest version of Spybot S&D on your computer. 1. The program can be started (launched) from either of two or more places depending on how the program was initially installed on your computer. The easiest method is to double click the Spybot Icon on the desktop or the Spybot icon on the quick launch bar. If you do not have a desktop icon or a quick launch icon you will have to use the “All Programs” list. Do this by clicking on the “Start” button in the lower left corner of the desktop screen and then clicking on “all programs” and then click on “Spybot – search & Destroy” and then click on “Spybot” to start the program. 2. When the program starts the first thing you will want to do is click on the “search for updates” button and then follow the prompts to download the current anti-spy ware signature files. You may be required to put a check in the box next to the item you want to update. If no update is available a window will come up stating there is no update and you will have to click “OK” to continue. 3. To scan the system for spyware, click the “Search & Destroy” button in the left pane of the program window and then click the “check for problems” button on the right pane of the program window. This will start the scan. You will see the number of files checked adding up in the lower left corner of the screen. This number may stop changing for a short time and resume. This is normal and as the scan proceeds a list of offending items will be displayed. 4. Once the search is finished look at the list of items found. There should be a check in each box next to the item. If items in the list are not selected with a check mark in the box next to the item, you will have to select them manually or they will not be removed from the system. Do this by placing the cursor over one of the boxes and then click the right mouse button and this will bring up a menu list. Choose with the left mouse button “select all”. This will place a check in all the boxes. 5. Click on “fix selected items” to remove them from your system. If you are running windows XP or ME you may be informed a system restore point is being created. Wait for this to finish. If it seems to take a very long time, you may have to look under one of the windows for a small window with an “ok to continue” button on it. Click it and the program will alert you when it is finished by placing green checks next to the items it removes. 6. You can close the program by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner of the program screen or run the scan again. How to Get and Install Spy ware removal software To download and install: Ad-aware Personal se: If the program has not been downloaded to your system or you do not have it on disc you will need to obtain the latest version of the program from someone who has it on disc, or you will have to download it from the internet. This must be done before it can be installed on your computer. If you have internet access you can download it from http://www.northshorepc.com/download.htm or directly from the Lavasoft website at http://www.lavasoft.de (notice it is “.de” not “.com”). The steps below explain how to download it from the North Shore Personal Computers web site. 1. To download the program to your computer for installation, open your browser to http://www.northshorepc.com and click on the “download” button near the top of the page. This will take you to a page with several anti-spyware programs available for you to download. Near the bottom of the page choose the blue button for ad-aware. Depending on your browser and security settings you may be alerted that this type of file can hurt your computer. Follow the prompts to allow the download. You may have to click the button again to begin the download. When you are asked what to do whit the file choose “save” and when you are asked where to place the file, it is easiest to put it on the desktop. Choose the desktop from the drop down list if it is not already showing and click the save button. When the download is complete click the “close” button. This should place an icon for “aawsepersonal2.exe” on your desktop. 2. Next you will want to close all the browser windows or programs that are running. 3. Click on the “aawarepersonal.exe” icon you downloaded to the desktop. This will start the installer program. When the install program starts you will see a “Welcome to Ad-Aware SE Personal Setup Program” window. You will want to follow the prompts and click the “next” button. 4. This is the “license agreement” window. You will have to click the small box to accept the license agreement. Once you have placed the check in the box, the “next” button becomes bold and you can click on it to continue to the next window. 5. Now you will be looking at the destination location window. I suggest you accept the default destination location and click next again. 6. Now you are looking at the “install to all users” menu and you are asked if you want to install to the “all users” menu or for “only one user”. I would suggest you allow anyone to use the program, that way you can run the scan from any user that is logged on. Click the “next” button. 7. This will be the start installation page and when you click “next” you will see the Install window and 2 blue indicator bars. 8. Once the program is installed you will be shown another window indicating Ad-Aware SE Personal has been successfully installed. You will see 3 check boxes with checks in them. 9. Click the “finish” button the program will start and perform a definition file update, run a full automatic scan of your system and open the program help file. Close the help file by clicking on the x in the upper right corner of the help window. 10. Once the program is loaded on your system you will want to follow the directions for running it found at the beginning of this document. 11. You may also want to delete the “aawsepersonal2.exe” file from your desktop to avoid confusing it with the icon for launching the program. This will help avoid redundant reloading of the program. To do this use the mouse and click the right mouse button on the “aawsepersonal2.exe” icon and from the menu that comes up choose delete. You can always download a fresh copy from the web. Spybot S&D: If the program has not been loaded on your system or you do not have it on disc you will need to obtain the latest version of the program from someone who has it or from the internet. Next you will want to close all the browser windows or programs that are running. 3. Double click on the “spybotsd13.exe” icon you downloaded to the desktop. Depending on your security settings and os you may receive a security warning. Choose “run” if you get the message box. This will start the installer program and it will ask what language you would like to install. English will be the default so you can click “OK”. When the install program starts you will see a “Welcome to the Spybot – Search & Destroy setup wizard” window. You will want to follow the prompts and click the “next” button. 4. This is the “license agreement” window. You will have to click the small circle or box to accept the license agreement. Once you have placed the check or dot in the box or circle, the “next” button becomes bold and you can click on it to continue to the next window. 5. Now you will be looking at the destination location window. I suggest you accept the default destination location and click next again. 6. Now you are looking at the select components to install window. I would suggest you allow the default settings and click the “next” button. 7. This will be the Select start menu folder page. Click “next” and you will see the select additional tasks window. You can un-check the “create a quick launch icon” if you do not want the extra icon by clicking on the check one time. Click “next” and the ready to Install window will appear. Click “install” and 1 indicator bar will appear to show the install progress. 8. Once the program is installed you will be shown another window indicating “completing the spybot search & destroy setup wizard” has finished installing. You will see 1 check box on this window and it will have a check in it. You can remove it if you do not want the program to run after you click the “finish” button. If you leave it checked and then click “finish” you will be shown a small window warning about removing advertisement robots and that you may not be able to use the host program that installed them if you remove the spyware. Put a check in this box so you will not see this message when the program runs the next time. If this is the first time the program has been started you will be shown the spybot wizard and you will be asked to create a registry back up. I suggest you do this before clicking the green “next” button. To create the reg. backup click on the button “create registry backup” and wait for the “next” button to turn green again (this can take a few minuets, be patient). 9. Once the “next” button is green again click it. It will take you to a new page and ask you to “search for updates”. Do NOT click the green “next” button. Click the “Search for updates” button and the program will access the internet and a new button labeled “download all available updates” will appear. Click “download all available updates” and a complete definition and file update will occur. It may even shutdown the program and restart the process all over again, just follow the prompts and do what you did above and you will return to the program. 10. Once the program is loaded on your system you will want to follow the directions for running it found at the beginning of this document. You may want to delete the “spybotsd13.exe” file from your desktop to avoid confusing it with the icon used to launch the program. This will help avoid redundant reloading of the program.
